How to Choose the Right Counseling Service for Your Needs

Searching for the right therapy can feel overwhelming. With so many types of counseling available, it’s natural to wonder: Which service is best for me or my family? Whether you’re considering individual counseling, play therapy for your child, couples counseling, or family counseling, making the right choice is key to getting the most out of your sessions. This guide will walk you through the different options, when to consider each, and tips for choosing the right counselor for your needs.

1. Understanding the Different Types of Counseling

Individual Counseling

Best for people who want one-on-one support to manage stress, anxiety, depression, or personal growth. This service is highly personalized and focuses on your goals.

Play Therapy

Designed specifically for children, play therapy helps kids express emotions, work through challenges, and develop healthy coping skills in a language they understand—play.

Couples Counseling

Ideal for partners who want to strengthen communication, resolve conflict, or rebuild trust. Couples counseling can support relationships at any stage, from dating to marriage.

Family Counseling

Helps families improve communication, resolve ongoing issues, and build stronger connections. This type of therapy is particularly useful during life transitions or conflicts.

2. Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Counseling

  • Your Goals – Do you want to focus on personal growth, your child’s development, your relationship, or your family as a whole?
  • Age of Client – Adults may benefit most from individual therapy, while children often thrive in play therapy.
  • Type of Challenge – Relationship issues point to couples counseling, while recurring household conflict may need family counseling.
  • Location & Accessibility – Consider in-person counseling in Fort Worth or Arlington, or telehealth if you prefer online sessions.
  • Affordability – Look for sliding scale options and financial assistance, such as those offered by EmpathyHQ.

3. Signs You’re Ready to Start Counseling

Still unsure if counseling is right for you? Look for these signs:

  • Feeling stuck in unhelpful patterns.
  • Persistent stress, anxiety, or sadness.
  • Relationship conflicts that don’t improve.
  • Children struggling emotionally or behaviorally.
  • Communication breakdowns within your family.

If these sound familiar, it’s a good time to explore counseling options.

5. Tips for Getting the Most Out of Counseling

  • Be open during intake – Share your concerns honestly so your therapist can recommend the right service.
  • Set goals early – Define what success looks like for you, your partner, or your family.
  • Stay consistent – Regular attendance is key to progress.
  • Practice outside sessions – Apply strategies in daily life for the best results.
  • Choose comfort – The right counselor is someone you feel safe and comfortable with.

Do I have to have custody agreement or court order for my child to receive services?

YES. If your child does not live with both biological parents and there is any court order or custody agreement in place, it must be on file. In order for a counselor to see your child, they must have obtained and reviewed the MOST RECENT custody agreement or court order, and any applicable part of a divorce decree that mentions custody. When federal or state statutes provide an exemption to secure consent of a parent or guardian prior to providing services to a minor, the counselor must follow the protocol set forth in such federal or state statutes. If documentation is not provided, your child cannot be seen by a counselor.
